Few Canadians have made as signifigant a contribution to golf as Stanley Thompson. There is no doubt that the likes of George Knudson, Moe Norman and more recently, Mike Weir, have their place in Canadian golf lore as well. But few if any can claim the legacy that Thompson left. Thompson is credited with designing or building between 125 to 150 courses. These courses can be found in Colombia and Brazil. Jamaica, the United States and of course, Canada. Of the top 50 golf courses in Canada, at least 14 of them bear the Thompson designation.
Jasper Park, Banff Springs and Highlands Links are but too name a few. Thompson's influence can also be found in courses designed by such notables as Robert Trent Jones and Robbie Robinson.
Thompson is credited with many architecthural innovations which are still very much in use today. Green side and fairway bunkers that create dramatic visual impacts from the tee are a typical Thompson trademark.
Considering the era in which Thompson plied his trade, one of his greatest accomplishments was to travel as extensively as he did. Remember, travelling to Alberta and South America could take anywhere from 3 day's to a week back then.
